Classic Alex Dean motion. Two weeks ago, Alex Ward already predicted this exact motion to come up.

This is indeed one of the Durham motions. Last year it was the prepared resolution for their Durham Schools.

I sense a minefield for 1st Prop on this topic.

Is the debate about jurisdictions where both death penalty and life imprisonment are allowed? Or is it about offering an elective death penalty for the prisoner even in previously life-only jurisdictions?

And what is the meaning of "life" in "life imprisonment", for the purposes of this debate? What if the sentence is "life, but you'll be out in 10 years with good behaviour"?

Oh dear...

A cheeky version of the case would be about whether those in custody for life imprisonment can specify an Advance Directive, refusing a suicide watch and stating Do Not Resuscitate in the event of attempted suicide. But that is perhaps a bit too oddball... although I think it might make sense amidst the authentic hung-over quarters buzz that Hume speaks of... ;-)
